WHO WILL SNATCH TROPHIES AT GLAM AWARDS 20?
It’s officially Awards Season! And while all the queens are clutching pearls and starting slap fights over Helen Mirren or whoever in gay hell it is this year, no event is more anticipated in NYC than the Glam Awards!
In its milestone 20th year, the Glam Awards honors the best of NYC nightlife. Nominees and winners are submitted and selected by popular vote via a jury comprised of those working in nightlife. Created by Cherry Jubilee, this event has celebrated the biggest names to make us dance, laugh, serve, and twirl - including Lady Bunny, Honey Dijon, Candis Cayne, Cazwell, Bianca del Rio, Kevin Aviance, Michael Musto, Sherry Vine, and always Amanda Lepore.
To be honest, the Glam Awards has more recently shifted to celebrate primarily the bar side of nightlife - one that isn’t really my thing per se. But that is what NYC nightlife is currently due to shifting queer culture. You can’t honor the club side of nightlife when it barely exists! Michael Musto’s 2016 article in The New York Times, “Gay Dance Clubs on the Wane in the Age of Grindr” lays it all out perfectly with input from all the top promoters of the time. Hopefully you haven’t exceeded your limit of free article views on the site, because that one is required reading. Hell, get a subscription if you need it - support the press!
So when you see the winners announced, don’t be surprised if it didn’t go the way you might have expected if you operate only in Clubland - the majority of the people working in NYC nightlife are in the bar scene so you’re going to see that side dominate more than likely.
On to the show! As mentioned, Cherry Jubilee started the Glam Awards 20 years ago when she recognized a need to honor the incredible forces making waves in NYC. This year she is joined by Vincent Cooper in producing the show on Monday, Jan 14, at Sony Hall, hosted by Bob the Drag Queen and Peppermint. You can get tickets to the show here.
Now we come to the scathing portion of this article. I’m just kidding! Mostly. I have a few personal predictions on this year’s nominees, based purely on bias. Will they actually win? I don’t know. I mostly just deleted all the nominee names I don’t know and start from there.
For a full listing of all nominees, please see here. It’s a long goddamn list.
SHERRY PIE - Without a doubt. If you haven’t seen this powerhouse create, perform, shade, and saunter, you’re missing out on a delicious slice of hot, steaming Pie.
BEST PARTY PROMOTER:
ANTONI CEDENO or MIGUEL COLIN or RIFY ROYALTY - If you’re looking for what’s hot to do in NYC any given weekend (and my RSVP page hasn’t done shit for you,) check with these three party people and you’ve basically got the full picture.
2FACE - Usually a fan favorite for this award. Love seeing this one out, but I’m usually not at his gigs.
CARRY NATION (NITA AVIANCE & WILL AUTOMAGIC) or DAWSON - My personal taste and preference would be either of these two.
CLUB CUMMING - A clear choice to me as the newly birthed epicenter of artistry for NYC.
REBAR - What I consider to be the party test grounds of bars. They’ve given any and every promoter, established or upcoming, opportunities to try different events, often advising those that come through their doors on how to continue improving.
STONEWALL - C’mon it’s Stonewall 50 this year queens! Even if you don’t vote it as best bar, it deserves the recognition deserved this year of all years.
BEST BAR PARTY:
BOYS at Rebar -This received some minor backlash originally for its masc-presenting feature, but let’s be honest, Frankie Sharpe knows what he’s doing and celebrates ALL in ALL ways. And it’s become a weekly staple when you just wanna wake up in Chelsea with dick for breakfast.
STRAIGHT ACTING at Metropolitan - This is a cute gig that has continued to bring out the flair and femme for a night of frivolity for over 4 years now. Admittedly, I will not be receiving an attendance award for this one, but I want to! Here’s to more Straight Acting twirls for me this year.
TURNT at The Ritz - When people ask where to go during the week, I always point them here. Madd’s cast and party is always truly TURNT! I would go to work with a hangover for this one. Worth it.
3 DOLLAR BILL - It’s the ONLY queer club in NYC. It opened last summer, and deserves our recognition, support, and appreciation.
BEST CLUB PARTY:
ON TOP - Only at On Top could I have sex in a fierce lqqk in front of the DJ booth on a Mid Summer’s Eve. You heard me. Facts are facts America. On Top is fierce.
SUTHERLAND - The clear and only true winner in my book. From the brilliant minds of Guy Smith and Tad of Occupy the Disco, this party is more than just a party. It is a soul and a sound and a history of NYC nightlife rolled into something truly special that I sincerely hope we continue to enjoy. Demand Sutherland.
DRAG WARS - I warn everyone that the one thing in NYC that can really fuck me up is a Monday in the West Village. I’ve missed flights because of Mondays in the West Village - and all thanks to fucking Shequida and this ongoing competition that celebrates the rising stars, the first nighters, and the ones that should really find a new hobby.
LOOK QUEEN - Now this one really shows who’s got IT. A LOOK QUEEN winner is one to watch.
No fuckin clue.
NEDRA BELLE - Bish, sing! I love this one, and I’m always moved when I hear that voice. If awarded, Nedra may again announce an afters at the Four Seasons. Do not go if you have work the next day.
AMANDA LEPORE - Stop giving this award to Amanda Lepore! She wears panties and pasties! She is FIERCE and none can dare to compare, but please pass the baton to someone who is DRESSED!
CT HEDDEN or RIFY ROYALTY - They bring it every. single. damn. time. Fashion personified in both of these queens. Always daring. Always correct. And also always playing with gender beyond the binary.
BEST HAIR DESIGNER:
BOBBIE PINZ or PERFIDIA - These two DO hair. That is what they DO and they are fierce.
MADDELYNN HATTER - This is a queen doing hair for queens. You want hair for a show - you go to her.
BEST FASHION DESIGNER:
DIEGO MONTOYA, DIEGO MONTOYA, DIEGO MONTOYA, HONEY.
BEST DANCE PERFORMER:
EGYPT or PIXIE AVENTURA - I want to see MORE every time they step on stage. I’ve said since the first day I saw her perform that Egypt would be NYC’s next drag superstar in years to come. If she continues to do her work and learn, I can’t wait to see what she does down the line. Watch her.
BEST CABARET SHOW:
MARY! at Club Cumming or STEPHANIE'S CHILD with Jan Sport, Lagoona Bloo and Rose'
BEST BURLESQUE PERFORMER:
CHRIS HARDER - I don’t know. I think he’s the most recognized name so he wins every year?
BEST GO GO BOY:
NIKCO FUME - Please switch up the winner this year.
BEST COMEDY PERFORMER:
ARI KIKI or BOOTSIE LEFARIS or KHIZHA CARR or MARTI GOULD CUMMINGS or SHERRY PIE or SUTTON LEE SEYMOUR or TINA BURNER or ZALIKA PARSONS! -Literally all of the nominees can make me hee-haw so any one of them could take it.
HONEY DAVENPORT - Purely for her nerve to stand on her stage, call out discrimination publicly, and walk out on her own show for what was right. We applaud you Honey Davenport. See more in Paper Mag.
PIXIE AVENTURA & KIZHA CARR or STEPHANIE’S CHILD
BEST MALE PERFORMER:
JAYSE VEGAS - From what I’ve seen of this artist, he really puts his heart and soul into what he does.
BEST NIGHTLIFE EVENT:
ALEGRIA - I will always say Alegria, Alegria! And I will have MORE to say on that in a future post.
BLACK PARTY - You will always hear that The Black Party hasn’t been the same since the closing of Roseland Ballroom. And of course! Shifting from warehouse space to other warehouse space every year on the fly to build a massive 15-hour party from scratch is VERY fucking difficult. And when it HAD to move to Space Ibiza in 2017 to avoid a city-shutdown during the crackdown of warehouse parties, it was just not good. Coming into 2018, Saint at Large had a lot to prove. When they moved to Depot 52 with a fresh creative direction by Gio Black Peter for 2018, the FUCKING NAILED IT! Apart from a problematic skylight, this was THE party of the year and I wish I could savor it just one more moment. My resounding applause to all that made people say, “THAT reminded me of Roseland Ballroom.”
BEST EVENT PRODUCER:
FRANKIE SHARP - It’s his year again. This guy’s been working it for the kids, and I feel has had a truly inspired year of shaping his next chapter in NYC.
RIC SENA - He’s a true producer, which most of the people at the Glam Awards will probably never get to appreciate. As the production designer of Alegria, Sunrise, and Viva!, Sena is a true talent delivering the best in Circuit for NYC & Beyond.
BEST NIGHTLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER:
JEFF EASON or RICHARD BURROWES - You always want to see one of these two with a camera in hand at any party. But remember, they SEE ALL in the scene.
BEST NIGHTLIFE BLOGGER/WRITER:
ALEXANDER KACALA - Formerly the guy-about-town for Hornet, I once regarded this one as a rival! Thankfully we both recently parted ways with our app allegiances, because I always admired his voice and passion for the queer community. Looking forward to seeing more!
R. KURT OSENLUND - I was fortunate to meet this one early on in my NYC days, and have always been fascinated by his insight and interviews. I’ve been known to say he’s the one writer I’ll always read start to finish.
EARLY ROSS or MARKUS KELLE - Always giving you full look, and always commanding the door with full cunt.
GIVE YOU LIFE - Jayse Vegas (featuring Kareem McJagger & Kimmi Moore) - Produced a better vid than gurls with RuPaul money. Giving me a LOT of NY scene. I’m into it.
CT HEDDEN or RIFY ROYALTY - Again, these two are always neck and neck for me. Who will it be???
And now, drum roll… finally the end of this stupid fucking predictions post! If you made it this far (without scrolling past everything you lazy fuck!) please find me so I can give you a big kiss! Wherever you want! Really. Wherever. Now the envelope please….
ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR:
Which of these incredible nominees will it be?
BRITA FILTER or HONEY DAVENPORT or MARTI GOULD CUMMINGS or MONET X CHANGE or PIXIE AVENTURA or RIFY ROYALTY or SHERRY PIE or TINA BURNER
My money says this is finally the year of:
PIXIE AVENTURA - She has been working hard for the children all over town! Her hosting of HK fave The Help has lasted three co-hosts (two going on to RPDR.) Whenever I hear talk of who the best queen in NYC is right now, it is always Pixie. She even recently landed a gig hosting SCRUFF’s new in-app game show, Hosting, which will be broadcasting her hilarious schtick to thousands of horny gays across America this year.
So that’s all folks! All my opinion and no one else’s. See you Monday night, when we see who really snatches trophies.
