GLAM AWARDS 20 WRAP-UP

Another one in the books! The Glam Awards 20 closed with a new class of well-deserving winners. The star of the evening was the fantastic production of this annual event by Cherry Jubilee, joined this year by Vincent Cooper. Sony Hall was the truly Glam setting that you could not deny elevated the experience. The hall was chock-full of nightlife’s best, worst, and most-jaded. Hosts Bob the Drag Queen and Peppermint were expectedly a riot, but really carried the show along beautifully and you could tell they were so happy to be sharing the stage together. And we learned that Tony-award winning actor Alan Cumming is perhaps not so eloquent on-the-spot – would that speech ever just end?? (We love you Alan!)

I was first highly pleased to see where the $10 worth of Ticketmaster processing fees went - the 23 people that had to check for my ticket before I even made it past coat check! I thought it was outrageous at first, but after seeing that much attention to detail, I have no further questions, Your Honor.

We were well-reminded of what drag as activism stands for with both Honey Davenport’s powerful opening performance AND acceptance speech for Best Hostess, as well as Marti Gould Cumming’s acceptance for Entertainer of the Year, earned in part through her political activism. Davenport called the community to action in her speech; that we remember if all bartenders/staff are white, and all event fliers feature white guys, that people of color do not have a space at the table and do not feel welcome. Let’s do better NYC and Beyond. Diversity makes our community stronger, beautiful, and better.

The absolute highlight of the show was the performance by the cast of Mary! from Club Cumming. From start to finish, they stole the show, showing exactly why they were deserving of Best Cabaret Show and why I will not miss the next show on Jan 29th. Hats off to Tyler Ashley of the cast for also serving the ONLY fluorescent neon, assless gown with full mobility for giving showz. She does it so well.

The gag of the night was definitely the SHADE from Florence D’Lee and Bobbie Pinz during their acceptance speeches for Best Fashion Designer and Best Hair Designer respectively. Y’all better start tagging and PAYING your designers and stylists. Also to note, Chris Harder’s pre-planned text acceptance speech (he tied with Twinkie Boots), which asked that he NOT receive this award anymore and others in the category be recognized. Let’s do the same for Best Gogo.

I only rolled my eyes or said, “Who? Huh?” to a few of the winners, with many being well-deserved (if not perhaps my personal choice.) But… Wigstock2.Ho as Best Nightlife Event? No.

The major players of the night were absolutely the team of Club Cumming and Frankie Sharpe. Congrats to everyone that was nominated, won, and makes NYC nightlife better for all. See a list of all 2019 winners below.

Xx.
